From Weak Hero to King Danjong | Park Ji-hoon in The King’s Warden

The King’s Warden (왕과 사는 남자) | The Story of King Danjong

Hello everyone!
This is Soo from Play the Korean.

In the previous post, we learned Korean with a scene from Weak Hero. Today, let’s move from a modern school drama to a historical Korean film.

The lead actor Park Ji-hoon, known to many viewers through Weak Hero, also plays the young king Danjong in the recent Korean historical film The King’s Warden (왕과 사는 남자).

The movie became a huge success in Korea and even passed 10 million moviegoers. That is one reason many people started talking again about the tragic story of King Danjong.

🎬 A Key Scene from The King's Warden (왕과 사는 남자)

This scene is one of the most interesting starting points of the film.

The village head Eom Heung-do asks for his village to be chosen as a place of exile. At first, this sounds strange, because exile was usually something people wanted to avoid.

But his village is suffering from hunger and deep isolation. If the village becomes an exile site, government officials, guards, and supplies will regularly  come in. That could help revive the local economy and keep the village from being completely cut off from the outside world.

That is why this scene feels both surprising and meaningful. A place of punishment could also become a way for a village to survive.

🗣️ Korean Line Practice

At the end of the scene, the final line is:

감사합니다.

Gamsahamnida.

Meaning:
Thank you.

This is one of the most common and useful polite expressions in Korean.

💡 Pronunciation Tip

When spoken naturally, 감사합니다 can sound a little softer and faster:

감사합니다 → 감사함니다 (natural sound)

Try saying it slowly first:

감-사-합-니-다

Then try it again more naturally:

감사합니다.

🎬 About the Movie

The King’s Warden (왕과 사는 남자) is a Korean historical film set in 1457, around the time when the young former king Danjong was living in exile.

The film follows the relationship between Danjong and the village head Eom Heung-do, showing friendship, loyalty, and sorrow during one of the most tragic moments in Korean history.

👑 Who Was King Danjong?

King Danjong was the sixth king of the Joseon Dynasty. He became king at a very young age, but later lost the throne to his uncle.

Because of this, Danjong is remembered as one of the most tragic young kings in Korean history. His story still moves many Korean viewers today.

🎭 Why This Film Matters

This movie is not only a historical drama. It also helps modern viewers feel the loneliness and humanity of a young king who lost everything too early.

For fans of Park Ji-hoon, this film is especially interesting because it shows a very different side of him compared with Weak Hero.
