Knock Knock Take a Break #3
π Korean Double Vowels (Diphthongs)
Hello, everyone! This is Soo from Play the Korean.
Today we will learn Korean double vowels — also called diphthongs!
1) What is a Double Vowel?
A double vowel is when two vowels combine to make one sound.
It’s similar to English sounds like “ya,” “yo,” or “we.”
2) Y-Sound Double Vowels
When a short extra line is added to a basic vowel, it often creates a “y” sound.
| Letter | Sound | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
| μΌ | ya | γ with a “y” sound |
| μ¬ | yeo | γ with a “y” sound |
| μ | yo | γ with a “y” sound |
| μ | yu | γ with a “y” sound |
3) Combined Double Vowels
Some double vowels are made by combining two basic vowels.
| Letter | Sound | Made From |
|---|---|---|
| μ | wa | γ + γ |
| μ | wae | γ + γ |
| μ | ui | γ ‘ + γ £ |
For μ / μ, start with your lips in an “o” shape, then quickly move to the next vowel sound.
4) Practice Time π
Read the words aloud:
- μ°μ (milk)
- μμ? (Why?)
- μμ (chair)
- μμ (comes)
- κ°μ (singer)
- λΉ ν° μμ€ (BTS)
Try reading each word twice. Which one is the hardest?
Great job! π
